A farmhouse from 1784, a family from Ciutadella and twenty-two rooms.

We bought the finca in 2016 with the roof fallen in and a fig tree in the kitchen. Three years later we opened with eight rooms. There are twenty-two now, and the fig tree is still there.

The whitewashed farmhouse at Calma today

The main house, built in 1784, restored between 2016 and 2019.

The house

The main building is from 1784, a working farm for two centuries and empty for thirty years before us. We restored it with lime, local stone and oak, and added nothing it did not already have. The stables became the Garden Rooms. The dairy became the restaurant.

The way we run it

Small on purpose. Breakfast is never rushed, nobody is asked to leave the pool and the people at reception are the people who own the house. We know the coast path, the market and the wind, and we will tell you where to go.

The island

Menorca is a biosphere reserve. The water comes from our own cistern, the garden feeds the kitchen and the olive oil is ours. We would rather have fewer guests who stay longer.

Water

Rain from the roofs fills the 1784 cistern. It waters the garden and fills the pool.

Food

The garden, the farm next door, the harbour. Nothing on the menu has flown.

Energy

Solar on the stables, heat pumps in the rooms, and shutters that do most of the work.

People

Fourteen of us, all from the island, all year round.
